When you open a website, your device sends a request that is split into small packets of data. Each packet travels through routers, cables and sometimes satellites, choosing the best path available at that moment. Servers far away receive the request, find the page, and send it back the same way. The packets are then reassembled in the right order on your screen, usually in less than a second, as if the page had always been there.
