Sunlight looks white, but it contains every color of the rainbow. When it enters the atmosphere, it collides with tiny gas molecules. Shorter wavelengths, such as blue and violet, are scattered far more than longer red wavelengths. Our eyes are more sensitive to blue than violet, so the sky appears blue during the day. At sunrise and sunset, light travels through more air, the blue is scattered away, and warm reds and oranges remain.
